Stainless Steel Finishes

Given the extreme popularity of stainless steel appliances in today's kitchens, Stainless Steel has become the most sought after cabinet hardware finish. Not only does it blend with the appliances perfectly, it also provides extreme durability. There are many grades of stainless steel hardware available with each grade offering a different degree of corrosion resistance depending upon the amount of Chromium and Nickel added to the steel. Stainless Steel grades 201, 202 and 304 are most commonly found in cabinet hardware production. We have found type 202 (18% Chromium, 4-6% Nickel) offers very adequate corrosion resistance when installed in most households. Type 304 (8% Nickel) is a step up and, for those who live on the water, marine grade (type 316) is the safest bet. Of course, price increases with increased chromium and nickel content.

Contrary to popular opinion, Stainless steel can eventually rust if repeatedly exposed to high humidity and chemicals commonly found in a kitchen environment. The key to a long life for any cabinet hardware material is cleanliness. Be sure to routinely wipe you hardware clean and dry after use, especially in the sink and food preparation areas, and stainless steel will retain its new look indefinitely.
